The 10 best By Artist prompts, and why

Out of 350, these are the ones that play best in a real room: judged on real-game results where a prompt has them, and on how the round goes where it does not yet.

  1. Adele

One of the best-rated artists in real games. Every submission is a big voice and a big chorus, so the round comes down to which heartbreak the room prefers.

  2. Snoop Dogg

The best-rated artist in real rounds so far. Thirty years of catalogue, from G-funk to unlikely collaborations, gives every player a different answer.

  3. Radiohead

The most played artist prompt in real games. Every era has defenders, so the round becomes an argument about which Radiohead is the real one.

  4. Tame Impala

One of the most played and best rated. A small, well-loved catalogue means the round is about which deep cut beats the hit.

  5. Kendrick Lamar

A catalogue with no weak era and plenty of disagreement about the best album. Expect the argument to start before the vote.

  6. Frank Ocean

Few releases, each one loved, so every submission is strong. The winner is the song that means the most, not the most famous.

  7. Stevie Wonder

A 1970s run so strong a room could fill a whole game from five years of it. The obvious hit rarely beats the album track.

  8. Daft Punk

Recognisable from the first bar, with the argument between the house records and the disco album built in.

  9. Lana Del Rey

Among the most divisive artists in real games, because rooms split between devoted fans and people meeting her for the first time.

  10. ABBA

Every song is somebody's favourite, so the round is decided by which one gets the room singing. Works with any age group.

How do by-artist rounds work?

The prompt is a name and everyone submits their favourite song by them. Whoever comes up, from The Beatles to Bad Bunny, the whole room is answering from the same catalogue, so the round is a pure taste comparison. There is no interpretation to hide behind and no fact to look up, which makes it the most direct theme here.

What should you submit when everyone knows the artist?

Not the biggest song, and not the most obscure one either. The obvious hit is already taken by whoever submitted first, and a deep cut nobody recognises has to win on the music alone against tracks the room already loves. The album track everybody half remembers is the strongest position in the round.

Which artists make the best rounds?

Artists with a catalogue people disagree about. Someone with one universally agreed masterpiece produces a round with one answer. Someone with four eras and an argument about which was best produces a round where five submissions each have a case, and that argument is what you actually came for.

By Artist prompts, answered

Which artists come up in a by-artist round?

Three hundred of the biggest names in music, drawn at random: rock, pop, hip hop, country, Latin, K-pop, Afrobeats, jazz and electronic. The list leans towards artists with global reach, because a round only works if most of the room knows at least one of their songs.

What is the best Fleetwood Mac song for an aux battle?

Something beyond Rumours, if you want to win, because "Dreams" and "The Chain" will already be taken. The best Fleetwood Mac songs covers all three versions of the band, including the Peter Green blues era most rooms forget.
